Memory Foam- What is it? Memory foam
was originally developed by NASA to ease the
pressure of extreme G-Force during space shuttle
take off. It was never used in the space program, but was subsequently used in
medical applications, for example with patients suffering from
pressure-sores or who are bed-bound for a long
period of time.
Memory foam
is often referred to as Visco Elastic Foam
It is created using polyurethane and a mixture of other reactive chemicals which
form a foam block after the expansion and curing processes. During the
manufacturing process the density of the foam block is decided. Higher density
memory foam reacts to body heat and weight, which allows it to mould itself to
the shape of a warm body within a few minutes. A lower density memory foam is
pressure-sensitive and will mold more quickly to the shape of the body. The
example often used to demonstrate its properties is that a hand pressed into the
foam and then removed will leave a clear impression in the foam.
Memory foam was initially too expensive
for general use, but in recent years because of demand, it has become cheaper to
produce and is now widely available. Its most common domestic applications are
mattresses; pillows and
mattress toppers. It remains useful in many medical-related areas,
offering comfort and support for many people with posture; orthopaedic and
disability difficulties.
Memory foam mattresses are usually more
dense than an ordinary foam mattress and are therefore heavier, but because of
it's obvious qualities, this is a little price to pay. It is a good compromise
between the comfort of a soft mattress and the supportiveness of a firm one.
Memory foam mattresses often cost more than traditional foam mattresses, and
many conventional sprung mattresses, but the benefits far out weigh this cost
difference, and also they generally have a longer life expectancy.
Memory foam often gives off a distinct
chemical odour when first purchased, this is a characteristic smell which is
apparent with all foam products. This fades over a short period of time.
